Generative AI Tools for Research: Finding Literature In-Person / Online

Interested in using AI-enabled tools to find existing literature on a wide range of topics? This interactive hybrid workshop will introduce researchers to generative AI tools and how they can support different stages of the literature searching process, from topic development and keyword generation to discovering and tracking relevant research.

Work with the free version of Consensus and Waterloo’s institutional subscription to Microsoft Copilot to learn when these tools are useful and when traditional database searching remains essential. Through demonstrations and hands-on comparisons with database results, learn how to integrate AI tools into a responsible and rigorous research workflow.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify where generative AI tools can provide support throughout the different stages of the literature searching workflow
  • Differentiate between types of AI tools for literature discovery
  • Compare generative AI outputs with database search results to evaluate accuracy, completeness and bias
  • Integrate AI tools into a responsible research workflow while maintaining scholarly rigor and transparency

Must be a Waterloo student, staff or faculty member to attend. Open to all levels of learners and researchers. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop to test out AI tools with a research topic they have some familiarity with.

This is a hybrid event, please register to receive the event link or hold your seat. The workshop will not be recorded and AI transcription is not permitted, but slides will be shared with those registered. If you have accommodation requests or questions, reach out to libevents@uwaterloo.ca with your needs.

Please note: This is the second workshop in the Generative AI Tools for Research series. Attendees are encouraged to attend the Responsible Use workshop before attending this workshop.
