MMIWG2S Art Unveiling and Dialogue with Shay Herold In-Person

Join the Libraries for the unveiling of a powerful statement piece that brings attention to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) crisis across Turtle Island.

Following the unveiling, participants are invited to engage in a community dialogue exploring the artwork's themes, the ongoing impacts of this crisis and pathways toward awareness, action and remembrance.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. If you have accommodation requests or questions, reach out to libevents@uwaterloo.ca with your needs.

Artist 

Shay Herold (she/he/they) is a Two Spirit individual who was born in Burns Lake, BC but currently resides along the Haldimand Tract in Waterloo. With mixed ancestry, their family resides in Dokis First Nation as well as Germany and Romania. They are wazhashk dodem, or muskrat clan, taking on roles of ecological guardianship and water stewardship. A current student at the University of Waterloo for Peace and Conflict studies, they use a blend of traditional teachings and academic techniques to advocate for systemic change.

Event Support  

Kevin George is Cree/Potawatomi, Fish Clan, from Kettle and Stony Point First Nation with matrilineal family on Fort McMurray 468 First Nation on Treaty 8 territory. Kevin enjoys a relational approach as an engaged Indigenous community member, facilitator and advisor, rooted in traditional knowledge and culture. In addition to his responsibilities in the community, he is currently the associate sirector, Indigenous initiatives at the University of Waterloo Libraries.
